N95/nokia/nokia n95 8gb Hi,
I am slowly getting more convinced that the N95 8GB would be a good choice for me, however i do have some questions that i need answered first :)
1. I read somewhere about the N95(-1) that it was very poor as a pedestrian GPS. I was hoping to use the N95 8GB to find my way around when abroad and on foot. Does the N95 8GB work satisfactorily when used this way? (i realize the maps are made mostly for car use).
And in connected with this question, how will this work with A-GPS disabled?(If i understand correctly, the A-GPS feature generates data traffic which will cost way too much when on holiday).
2. Can the N95's display be turned off (to conserve battery) when using the TV-out? (i was planning to use it with video glasses during airplane travel).
3. Is the screen and camera lens covered by the casing? Ie. if i get a scratch in either, will buying a new casing be sufficient?
4. I frequently need to switch between sending english and danish text messages, on my current phone
it takes a while to find the menu where i can change the T9 dictionary. Is this easier on
the N95 or is it possible to make a shortcut (perhaps having a menu with text-uk and text-dk)?
5. Is anyone aware of any external storage unit that works with the N95? I know that the N95 cannot act as an USB host, so
i suppose the options are either a HDD that can act as USB host, a HDD with wifi network sharing(used with SymSMB) or a
bluetooth HDD(plenty of those in development, none available right now it seems). It doesnt have to be battery driven,
i just want a way to swap content with the phone in hotel rooms etc but of course it would be nice. .
. ------------ 2. i wish there was. but there's no options to switch it off it seems. unless of course i haven't found it yet.
3. which casing are you referring to? the screen can be protected by an lcd film screen protector. theres also the film protector for the camera lens. you can get original spare parts @ Nokia N95 8GB Data Products & Gadgets - buy online from Blue Unplugged
4. if you press options during text compose, there's an option to change writing language. im not sure if this is what you're looking for
5. this is a tough one. a wifi nas perhaps? 120GB Wireless Nas :: :: TRITTON Technologies, Inc. but a laptop would be your best bet really. thats the trouble with the N95-2; no removable media. i wouldn't mind having 8GB of built in memory, but still provide the removable storage option ------------
------------ well, if you really love the N95, here's a good investment in the power department
Nokia Europe - Nokia Power Pack DC-1
and yes the plastic screen is attached to the casing, so if it gets scratched you can just get the front cover. im not sure if the lcd and camera lens film protector would come standard with the N95-2; it did with the N95-1, minus the camera one as it has a shutter. the camera lens is kind of an issue, in my opinion. check out this thread

and yes, i do learn new things about my phone as i go along. experiential learning they call it.
sad to say that wifi nas are meant for dedicated usage where they dont get moved around that much. maybe changing places around the room or house, definitely not travel. a 12" laptop would do the trick.
the N95-1's memory issue i can safely say has been ironed out, if not all. since the inclusion of demand paging in firmware v20.0.015, i haven't had any memory related errors at all.
however i can't share about the GPS part. because my country is so small. you could get lost only if you try very hard.
