Hi, I need a reasonably priced DVD recorder for transferring a load of old Hi 8 tapes to DVD. I already have an Inverto PVR so don't need any freeview or whatever - although it would be quite nice if I could link the two together so as to back up PVR files to disc. Can anyone recommend a DVD recorder for this purpose? The cheaper the better

If your PC is a reasonable spec with a sizeable hard disc and has a DVD rewriter then IMHO you are better off using a capture device and doing this on a PC as the editing is much easier.

What will you be replaying the Hi 8 tapes on - a Hi 8 camcorder or a later Digital 8 camcorder?

If you do go the DVD recorder route then if you want to edit it is advisable to use one with a hard disc drive such as the Sony HXD 870 or the Panasonic EX77.

Hi, I've already been doing this - I have Pinnacle Studio - but it takes an absolute age to do and ties up my PC resources while I need to work etc. So I feel I need a more dedicated route. I've got a Sony Hi-8 camcorder.

the sony 350 may do what you want , although you may be better with a sony 770 or 870 instead

almost any recorder with an ilink/firewire connector will do the job and I used to use a sony vx410

ah right , I was thinking of dv8 then ?

but the sony recorders should manage it with one of the inputs I hope

Thanks guys. Yes, the Sony camcorder is an old analogue model (CCD-T67E) with S-Video. So all the bells and whistles don't really matter. I'm not sure either that I want to edit the films. So perhaps even a cheap as chips ?5-?0 DVD recorder would do? Obviously you don't get quality brand names at that price - more like the Acoustic Solutions/Wharfedales and the like (probably all the same underneath anyways).

What the heck, I might as well go for a decent player as suggested - I've got the rest of the family to chip in with some cash as well now. So I'm looking for something up to ?00.

I've just ordered the Sony RDRGX350B from Amazon. A good buy?
