windows xp sp3/ Hi, Please can you help. I recently moved to NZ from the UK and have only recently unpacked my PC. I set it all up in my new office and everything was working fine. I did not connect the PC to the internet so it has not had any updates or patches installed since the UK. The other day I decided to re-arrange the office and tidy all cables and now the PC wont work. I have now removed all the cable ties and gently vaccummed the inside of the PC to remove any dust in case these were the cause of the issue. I have also unplugged all periferal devices so only the monitor and a wired keyboard are connected and still no luck. .
The PC starts fine and shows the quick flash bios screen, then briefly shows an XP flash screen as before. Then I get a small 'no signal' message on the monitor and it goes to black and the monitor moves into standby mode. The PC still seems to be running as the fans are still going but nothing happens no matter how long it leave it.
I would be extremely grateful if you have any help for me as I have no idea where to start sorting this out. I dont think it can be anything todo with the location here in NZ as all was working fine before I moved it to the other side of the room. The only work I have done on the PC is image editing using Adobe CS3 (which I really need to keep) and some Office 2007 offline work.
Many thanks! ------------
I've had video cards go bad with those symptoms. If you could borrow one from a friend to test, at least to the logon screen. If you have integrated video on your mobo, then it will have to be disabled at the bios level to allow adding an external card ------------
Hmm, unfortunately for me all my IT contacts are in the UK. What is a mobo? My video card is 256mb ddr dvidia 6200 pci express graphics with turbo cache, any knowledge of these? thanks again ------------
Mobo is just short for motherboard. If you have integrated graphics try booting with that, but don't forget to take out your graphics card before doing so. ------------
I just had the same problem with a computer I built for my Daughter, I just replaced the video card and it seems fine now, and it was a new video card...... ------------
Hi again, thanks for that. I have a nvidia nforce 4 pci-e sli mainboard with firewire 'mobo' and from what I can goggle I dont think it has an integrated video card. How did you go about replacing the video card? ie, when you slot a new one in, did it then start as normal and allow you to install the new drivers? many thanks! ------------
The new card plugs in where the old one is and xp should apply at least a driver to get the basic video and then you install the driver cd supplied by the card manufacturer. Once things are working, it's always a good idea to check the manufacturer's site for latest drivers as cds usually don't have the current stuff. Good luck ------------
do you get anything in safe mode
check what the bios lists for tempretures and voltages
i would lean more to the the power supply being gone
use a can of air for dusting a vaccum can cause static
