car mp3 player language en loc us/ Im looking to have a server with all my media on it, and of course that will include HD content.
My question is, what speed router will I need to provide sufficient bandwidth (presume I need 1 Gigabit), and also does anyone have any recommendations for a specific router / comments ? .
Thanks.------------ Any router with built-in 100mbps ports will suffice for HD streaming providing you're keeping your network Cat 5e hardwired. Gigabit would be better of course but router's with built-in gigabit switches aren't as common as the 100mbps port versions.
You can always connect a gigabit switch to a router anyway, the switch will give dedicated 1000mbps bandwidth to all devices and devices will only ever drop to the slower 100mbps when they need to connect to the web via the router.
I use the Netgear DG834G V4 router, this really is a very reliable workhorse that seems to work with almost anything.
The one thing I would add is don't even think about trying to stream HD wirelessly, even at Draft-N speeds you will still get stuttering, keep it hardwired all the way.------------ Thanks for the info.
I wasnt planning on going wireless, hardwired between all PC's is the way I was going to do it, just wasnt sure if 100mbs would have sufficient bandwidth.------------ Just connect your router to a 1G switch and plug all the PC's into that switch, no speed problems to be seen. I use a Netgear 8 port Giga switch with all the PC's in the house having 1 G ethernet ports. Data moves FAST.------------ If you already have a router then I would get an 8 port gigabit switch (netgears are very reliable) and just plug everything into that (1 port connecting to existing router). This is what I did when I wanted a bit of extra network speed.
Alternatively you can now get a gigabit enable router from Netgear now but they do have wireless as well. It will cost a lot more and you be restircted to 4 or 5 ports on the router.
If you need an ADSL Router it's this one
