Cydia. Thank you Jay Freeman (saurik).
Installer.app source = http://apptapp.saurik.com/
I'm sure your first question is... what is Cydia?
Basically its the new Installer.app. Better, faster, stronger... you know the deal. Unlike Installer.app, it is open source. This won't mean much for the casual iPhone user but it means the world to developers. The technical description is "a GUI front-end for a port of the Debian APT system which saurik himself ported to the iPhone along with a whole suite of Unix utilities he's also ported." sitemap
As of now this is not a replacement for Installer.app... It runs side by side. Cydia does not conflict with Installer.app in any way. One of the main differences is that Cydia uses Telesphoreo vs. Installer.app using BSD SubSystem. BSD SubSystem is long overdue for an update and Telesphoreo picks up what BSD left behind. When Cydia is installed from Installer.app, it deletes BSD SubSystem and installs Telesphoreo. All packages that rely on BSD will still run fine with Telesphoreo... however... if you update BSD through Installer.app, it will break Telesphoreo. So don't... instead use "Fake BSD" (this will be explained during the installation process)
Nobody is forcing you to use Cydia and if you don't understand it, it may be better to stick with Installer.app.
Overall, Cydia is a welcome alternative to Installer.app and an incredible addition to the iPhone. There is much much more to come as Cydia is only on version 1.0 so keep your eyes open.
Still have questions? This should answer most of them.
On a seperate note, expect Planet-iPhones.com to soon host a Cydia repository.
