Recently, Apple Computer re-hashed rules applying to the purchase of its iPhone. No longer is cash acceptable (only credit/debit cards), and each person can buy only up to two iPhones.

Apple explained that its move is influenced by the ever increasing number of unlocked iPhones across the globe -- 250,000 (at last count).
To many, it is surprising that Apple should be this worried over unlocked iPhones, when they should be more of a liability for AT&T.
The newest speculation on the subject centers around what AT&T might be paying Apple for each activated iPhone on its network.
While Apple has remained typically tight-lipped about this, it's thanks entirely to the Financial Accounting Standards Board, which makes rules for how companies in the US should keep their accounts, that the company has been forced to reveal its latest financial statement.

it shud not produce it in the 1st placeonlt nice share.....good !!! the reason is because apple has a diehard contract with AT&T (or Cingular) that they'll sell the iPhone only with them..
but people keep uplocking them, thus creating a gap between apple and at&t... I just bought a refurbished iphone and hopefully it should come by tomorrow. Its just 250 dollars..
Can one imagine the cost of the phone if it is sold unlocked by apple? An iphone would cost around 800 to 1000 dollars if apple sold it separately and still the phone will have its drawbacks. Now atleast i got it for 250 or a new one is 400.
Atnt paid apple, if i am not wrong, millions of dollars for the contract of iphone with atnt, for 5 years, thats the reason why apple is obliged to force people to stick to the contract. Nd probably its true that apple gets commission on every plan that is activated.
By selling iphone with a plan the phone has become cheaper.. and there are always people to it for us... it means that at&t can sue apple beacuse they have the license to be the network carriers of all iphones. kind of... but only in the US market...apple made a deal that iphone will be only sold as an atnt carrier phone in the US.. in other countries there are other carriers.... People hack the phone does not really concern apple as they are doing their part of the deal...
